Want Lessons To Learn A Foreign Language?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Important basic guidelines: Being totally different from any other course, you must never delay or ponder over any foreign language course. Chances of succeeding in a foreign language course is dim if you prolong the process where the minimum time that you have to devote is 3 hours weekly and 15 minutes on a daily basis. While you would benefit if you devote any additional time to study the language but make sure that each session does not last more than 45 minutes.

Segregate your study into several mini sessions. Attend classes regularly, if you want to pass the course and you are serious about the language. You could revisit your learning off and on and check what your have learnt in the past, for example the vocabulary. Below are some suggestions to make the different parts of learning a foreign language easier and more successful.

Get the meaning only of such words whose meanings simply can not be speculated or guessed. Read a little bit of the language every day, especially the chapters in the textbook.

Move on to talking: Everyone makes mistakes so listen to what others are saying and start to talk. Practice speaking out loud on your own, in a group of friends studying the same foreign language and with your pets such as a dog or cat.

Putting it down on paper: Practice your writing skills every day until they become more natural.

Ask a friend to dictate a passage of the language and then later check it for accuracy.

Some Assorted helps: Develop a Good Attitude, have reasons and goals for studying the foreign language. Know what you are going to get from your studies and how to get them. If you need help get it and do not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help for fear of sounding stupid, or being embarrassed. Ask questions, get help and never feel awkward to ask for assistance. Get audio tapes of the language and listen to them or make you own tapes and listened to yourself in order to perfect your pronunciation. The only way you can have correct pronunciation is to listen to audio tapes of the language or record something yourself and then listen to them. Make flash cards for vocabulary and try using different colors for different genders of the words and for different categories of words such as nouns, verbs and adjectives. If you study in groups you can also access help from your classmates.

The Job Interview - Get Familiar with the Jargon

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

To make a positive and lasting impression at a job interview, you have to be prepared. The interview is where an employer will decide if you will be an asset to the company. Knowing the proper way to conduct your self is a key factor to achieving a successful interview. You need to be familiar with the interview jargon. The following is a list of language tools you should be well versed in before attending a job interview:

1. Dont Use Unfamiliar Terminology. Dont use terms an interviewer is not familiar with. You should be well versed in the language the employer understands. For example some employers are not well versed in computer technical terms. If possible, research information about the employer and the company.

2. Dont overuse the Word I: If you use I too much when discussing past experiences, an employer may think that you are taking all the credit for work that others did. If you dont use I at all, the employer may think that you unable to work independently from others. Make sure you use both I and We during the interview.

3. Relaxed Communication: An employer wants to learn all about you. You have to be able to speak as though you are having a conversation. Say more than just yes or no. Youre your speaking style should flow and demonstrate that you are comfortable in any situation.

4. Overusing a Word or Phrase: Dont use a word too many times as it gives the impression that you are nervous. For instance, saying a word like however many times can distract an interviewer

5. Dont Use Marginal Words or Phrases: It does not sound professional if you keep repeating words or phrases such as Like or you know Always use professional words.

6. Engage The Employer: Dont just list your experiences. Use experiences to highlight particular qualifications. For example, if an employer wants to know how well you work with others, tell a story about an experience about when you and former employees worked together to solve a problem.

7. Prepare For Basic Questions: Dont focus solely on difficult questions an employer might ask. There are general job interview questions that almost every employer asks. One such question is: Why do you want to work for us? You should be prepared to answer general questions

8. Dont Slight Past Jobs: Dont ridicule past jobs. If you worked at a fast food restaurant and make negative comments about it, an employer may think you have a bad attitude. It would be more impressive to say what you learned from working there and how it allowed you to save money for college.

9. Be Attentive: Make eye contact with the employer. Listen carefully to what the employer is saying and make your answers complete to show you understand what the employer is saying. If there is more than one interviewer, make eye contact with all of them as you speak.

10. Dont use Slang: There is standard of acceptable business communication. Words like buddy and dude will not impress an employer. The employer wants to hire someone who communicates professionally.

11. Avoid Profanity: If you swear during an interview or use vulgar and offensive language, dont bother sitting by the phone waiting for the employer to call. Businesses expect their employees language and behavior to be professional and respectable.

12. Body Language: Dont fidget in your seat. Keep calm, relaxed, and always smile. Dont play with your hands. It is important to keep your mind and body composed during the interview. By maintaining a relaxed and happy composure, you will give the impression of competence and confidence.

13. Ask Questions: Employers expect that an interviewee is going to ask questions. Make sure your questions are clear and relevant to the business. Do some research about the company so that you can ask a good question.

The job interview is the stage where one can make a first-rate impression. How you conduct yourself at an interview will drastically increase your chances of getting a job.

Extra Large and Small Letters in the Hebrew Torah

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

When the Hebrew Torah is printed (by modern print or by scribes), there are seventeen occasions in which a letter is printed either larger or smaller than the surrounding letters. Hebrew doesn’t have upper or lower case letters, and this is not just a printer’s “trick”. This actually occurs in the first word, “BERESHIT” which means “In the beginning [of]“.

There are three approaches to these letters: 1) Letter Interpretation - based on the meaning of the letter itself, 2) Magnification/Diminuation - the impact of the size of the letter on the meaning of the word, 3) Addition/Omission - treating a large letter as doubled, or a small letter as omitted.

Genesis is the Greek name for the first book of the Bible, in Hebrew, it’s called “BERESHIT” which is the first word. It begins with an enlarged “BEIT” (BEIS for ashkenazi pronunication). Ya’akov ben Asher, commonly known as the Ba’al HaTurim, teaches that the Bible begins with the letter “B” (BEIT) because it is associated with “BRACHA” (blessing), and not the first letter of the alphabet, “A” (ALEPH), which can be associated with the word “ARUR” (curse). The Torah wanted to start on a pleasant note, as Proverbs 3:17 states: “Its way are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace.”

Can you see here, how the Rabbi was using the “Letter Interpretation” method here? He uses the meaning of the letter to interpret the verse. He further tells us that the letter “BEIT” has the numeric value of two. (In Hebrew school, children quickly learn that each letter has a numerical value, the first 10 letters based on the sequence of the alphabet). The number two is associated with duality. If we use our imaginations, to what duality could the first verse of the Bible be referring? Perhaps of heaven and earth, or the physical world verses the spiritual world (the seen as opposed to the unseen).

It could also suggest that the creation of the physical world depends on the male and female, duality of all species. It could also allude to the positive and negative charges of protons/electrons, or the magnetic fields which complement and balance each other.

Hebrew students also know that “BEIT” is not just a letter, it is also the word for “house”. The tabernacle is called the “BEIT HA-MISHKAN” (place of dwelling), and the temple is called the “BEIT HA-MIKDASH” (place of holiness). Thus, the large “BEIT” at the beginning of Gensis can also allude to the first and second temple, which represents God dwelling among men.

Common Illegal Questions You Shouldnt be Asked During a Job Interview

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Have you ever had a job interview where you wondered why in the world the prospective employer was asking certain questions that you thought were strange? If you thought they were strange, then you were probably right. There are certain questions that shouldnt be asked during a job interview. As a matter of fact, federal law prohibits an employer from asking questions that are not relevant to the job. All questions should be related to the job and not used to gather personal information.

Here are some of the job interview questions that you should not be asked during an interview, but employers tend to do it anyway:

What is your ethnicity? What is your sexual orientation? What is your religion? Do you attend church services regularly? Where were you born? How old are you? Do you have any disabilities? Are you married? Do you have children?

All of these questions have nothing to do with the job. The employer may ask if you have adequate transportation to get back and forth to work, but that is relevant to the job. It is relevant because your job depends on you being able to be there. The employer wants to make sure you can fulfill your obligation each day.

As for whether or not you have children or you are married, those questions are not relevant to the job. Most adults do have children and most adults do have a significant other. There are also many adults who dont have these things. Employers are not allowed to discriminate against you because you do have children.

Actually, an employer is not allowed to discriminate against you for anything at all. Many good candidates could be passed up due to discrimination. Everyone is to have an equal chance at getting the job regardless of their personal circumstances.

Unfortunately, there are still employers asking these questions and they are getting by with it. They have been known to ask questions such as, Will your children get in the way of your job responsibilities? They may even ask, Do you have adequate childcare so that you can carry out your job duties? These questions are not needed. Now, an employer may ask a question, such as Are you physically capable to carry out the job duties? This is a viable question for the fact that some jobs require heavy lifting or have other physical demands. If a person is not able to carry out those physical demands, then they may find that performing their job is very difficult. If someone says they are able to fulfill the physical demands, but they dont, then they could lose their job. This question cannot be considered a disability question.

If you find that you are being asked illegal questions in a job interview, it may be in your best interest to turn down a job offer. If they want to know why, there is nothing wrong with telling them that their questions were too personal. If they are going to ask you such questions during a job interview, then it is hard to tell how personal things would get when actually doing the job. You could be treading on shallow water and find yourself in a job that you would not like.

When you call an employer out on their illegal questions, you may be opening their eyes to what it is they are doing. Then again, you may not be. Just know that an employer that asks illegal questions is not exactly the type of employer you want to dedicate your time to.

Here’s A Quick Way To Learn French In Less Than 6 weeks

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Learning to speak a second language is one of the most rewarding challenges that you can undertake. Learning the native tongue of the countries you travel adds wonders to an already thrilling experience.

People can find many courses claiming to teach a foreign language. How do you know which courses are excellent and which ones fall short of their intended goal? This site was put up so that our experience can be shared with anyone who wants to learn how to speak French.

I have reviewed the program entitled Rocket French. This program have been developed by Rocket Language Ltd., and the coursework was written by Marie-Claire Rivire who is a native Frenchman. This company prides itself in its reputation in the production of high quality language learning courses which include Spanish, Italian, Chinese, French, German, Japanese and the American Sign Language.

Thirty-one audio tracks are contained in the first module. Even after your very first lesson you will be able to speak some basic words. This course teaches you conversational French so that you will be able to speak with native French people in your travels. You will be in your own comfort zone as you speak with locals, order in restaurants and ask for directions, etc.

This course also includes the actual transcripts of the audios which I found to be particularly helpful as I followed along. Every audio is approximately 20 minutes in length which means that altogether you will have about 11 hours of content. You will be able to use the methods within this content to absorb and speak modern French quickly. Eleven hours may seem like a lot of time, but as you make use of the audio tracks you will find that the time goes by effortlessly as well as quickly.

This program includes software which not only makes learning fun but easy as well. MegaVocab is the title of the first software application.

MegaVocab is a vocabulary recognition tool. This was found to be very helpful especially in the beginning. Basically, as you run through a series of words, you learn the words not only through repetition but by association with a picture. This is sort of like using flashcards, the same method you used as a child.

The software has a total of 1,000 words and pictures built into it. However, the course allows you to add more pictures and words of your own choice as you advance with the French language.

Once I began to learn the vocabulary, the next step was to go on to the MegaAudio software. I then began to feel self-confident with all I had learned.

The software will provide exercises that not only test but improve your recognition of the spoken words. You will always have a unit of measure for your progress as the system provides a score with every exercise that you take.

I found this software to be a lot of fun to use. It is one thing to learn the vocabulary, but to understand it when spoken is another. In my opinion this is where other programs fall short, and where Rocket French excels.

Another very cool aspect of the Rocket French program was that it isn’t just an introductory course. The course is designed with the assumption that the student has no background in the language when starting. But it continues to an advanced level as well. I felt like this increased the value of the program because I wouldn’t have to go out and buy a more advanced course as I progressed.

Possibly the most impressive part of this course is the members only forum where you can ask questions and communicate with other students and the Rocket Language online instructors. To me, this forum made the cost of this course a real bargain. If you happen to get stuck on something, you find lots of help in the forum.

My closing comment involves the pricing of this course. I wanted to get started straight away so I was delighted to find that they offered a download option which means they don’t have to ship out CD’s, software and printed material. They offer a two hundred dollar discount if you choose the download option (which is what I did). I was then able to listen on my computer, burn the material to a CD, and even load audio onto my ipod. By purchasing the downloaded course I was able to save myself two hundred dollars and I picked the course up for just under $100.

There is also another benefit that the people at Rocket offer. The course comes with a 60 day money back guarantee with no questions asked. When considering the quality of the material, the software, the bargain price, the forum participation and the guarantee, I can only bestow upon the Rocket French program the highest rating of 5 stars. If you want to learn a second language, you will have a difficult time beating this program’s quality.

7 ways to ensure success with an online education degree

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Attaining an online education degree has opened opportunities for many students, especially those who find paying for traditional full-time courses outside their reach. But as much as acquiring an online education degree has many benefits over traditional learning, many factors play a role in order to make it successful for online students. Because of the differences in the way that online education is disseminated and acquired, some amendments in approaching this mode of learning need be put in place to make it a success.

1. Choosing an ideal online education degree college - One of the ways to succeed is to select the right online education degree college. There are many dubious “fake colleges” out there that are only interested in selling their diplomas without providing any quality education and support to their online students. As a result, the diplomas acquired from these fake colleges may not be recognized by prospective employers who simply term then as fake degrees. To avoid this pitfall, it’s important to do background work on the college you wish to pursue. Before you enroll, check it out with relevant accrediting agencies to ensure that it is a legitimate college.

2. Evaluate the cost and benefits - Generally, obtaining an online education is a costly venture. Most people do not realize the cost is often more than a traditional education. So, it is important to evaluate the desired online education degree, and determine whether the benefit of future income opportunities will offer the reward for gaining an online degree.

3. Degree validation by employers - No wonder many employers are wary of online degrees. With bogus institutions literally selling degrees, employers have good reason to be doubtful and cautious. Therefore, immediately alleviate any potential misgivings by your prospective employer by offering verification of accreditation through an agency sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA.

4. Practice discipline, time management and be determined to succeed - During the course of learning, many students simply lack discipline and are unable to focus. This makes it difficult to keep up with their online lessons and coursework, it is thus crucial for students in pursuit of online education degree to have a great determination to succeed. It is very easy to lose focus and motivation when studying alone. Exercising good time management and keeping in constant touch with classmates would increase the morale to succeed.

5. Utilize all the facilities provided - Online courses generally provide online lectures and email correspondence to ensure a means of communication with instructors, tutors, and fellow students. Take advantage of every opportunity to utilize these resources of motivation and encouragement, as well as establish a sense of connection with the college or university.

6. Transfer credits - Students seeking an online education degree often have some credits from courses taken at other institutions of higher learning. Generally, online universities will accept some or all of the previous credits, so the courses do not have to be retaken. Therefore, it is incumbent on the student to obtain official transcripts, in order to receive credit transfers from their prospective accredited online college.

7. Make use of the educational technology - Accredited online universities offer a plethora of opportunities for doing necessary research and other facilities to ensure adequate completion of the course. Normally, the cost of virtual libraries, the programs to access online lectures, and even student online access and e-mail accounts are factored into the cost of the course. Therefore, it only makes sense to use all the technology available to make the most of the educational opportunity in achieving an online education degree.
