Foreign Language Course: Learning With Downloadable Audio Books

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Opportunities to learn a foreign language are plentiful, no matter where you live.

Being able to speak more than one language is important in this global community; it is necessary in order to take advantage of opportunities in foreign business and trade.

Being bilingual is a necessity if you want to compete in the world marketplace or become successful in your non-native country.

This need has resulted in numerous foreign language courses be available worldwide. Before you begin, make sure you are getting the course that will best prepare you to speak your new language.

No matter what type of foreign language course you take, there are some things you need to look out for. Above all, your course should be useful and effective and cover specific things to ensure your success.

When evaluating a course, keep an eye out for the following features. If your course lacks these, move on to another.

First, make sure the goal of the class and its objectives are clearly stated. Know, before you start, what you will come away with.

To illustrate this, let’s look at a course that might be offered to beginners.

Some classes claim to be able to teach everyone, from British students to those from Asia. But are the needs of these two diverse groups served by one class?

No. Students from different countries, especially when they have such diverse languages, need different types of instruction. They are not starting at the same place, so it will be hard to get to the same destination using the same method.

This makes a clear course description and structure so important. You have to be able to determine if the course will suit your needs, your prior learning, and your situation.

The second criterion that your foreign language class should meet is that it clearly explains how it is going to teach you.

For instance, if you are considering a class that claims you will be speaking your new language in six weeks, make sure they provide a timetable of specific actions that will get you there.

Will there be supplemental materials, workshops, seminars, and additional learning opportunities?

Will the class require you to be immersed in the language for the duration of the class?

Asking these questions before you decide on a course can help you determine whether the course is right for you and if it will help you achieve your goal of learning a new language. It is also important to find a class that suits your personal learning style.

It might be that a basic grammar course with worksheets will not work for you, while a direct immersion in the spoken language will.

How do you learn? Before you sign up for any foreign language course, ask yourself what you want to accomplish and if and how the program will help you do that.

How Do I Improve My Spoken English?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

If were asked the question, “How do I improve my spoken English?”, I would have been at a loss for an answer until recently.

It’s not just learning the mechanics of a new language that’s difficult. Speaking the new language in the proper accent can be just as hard if not more difficult.

Learning from a book will not prepare you for the actual speaking of a new language. The spoken word must also have the proper accent and that’s not in any book.

Some people look to private tutors for help with speaking a new language and losing the accent of their old one. Some refer to these teachers as Accent Reduction Specialists.

Although they can be the best solution in a perfect world, most can’t afford the price tag. There are also group classes, but the cost is still pretty high.

A new method of achieving what you want has been developed that solves the cost problem, but still delivers what you need and more. Programs are now available recorded in MP3 format.

You just download the files and put them on your MP3 player. Then when you have the right time and place to concentrate, turn it on and start learning.

You can even listen to them in your car while commuting to work or on a business trip. You could even take the recorded programs to the park and sit on a bench and enjoy the outdoors while you learn.

Some very smart professional people came up with this idea and it’s a good one. It solves the dilemma of cost but also adds the benefit of portability and being able to learn at your own pace. This is a tremendous leap forward in learning.

For very little cost you can now achieve your goal of losing an old accent and learning how to pronounce words in a new language.

You almost can’t even call it a purchase. It’s more like an investment in your future. A short time from now you could be seeing some big changes in your life. Doors may open for you after you complete your course. Changes could be on the way.

Want a better paying job? A course like this might let that happen. All kinds of things could be coming your way. It might just be the thing that’s been holding you back. It will likely uplift your confidence to go looking for more out of life.

No more will you have to ask, “How do I improve my spoken English?” You will already be there.

Eight Books You Should Make Sure Your Child Reads

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Reading is an essential part of every child’s growth and development. The list of lessons learned through literature is endless. Readers are taken to new places, introduced to new ideas and exposed to new people every time they pick up a book. While getting a child to read is not always the easiest task in the world, it is quite important. Literature is one of the best ways to expand their horizons and teach them about life.

Here is a list of eight must-reads for children that are sure to get them interested in reading:

1. Dr. Seuss Green Eggs & Ham One of the most familiar stories in world popular culture, the reading of Green Eggs & Ham will bring your child into a literary tradition. Its rhyme and repetition render it fun and easy to follow for small children. Furthermore, it is an initial contact point with poetry.

2. Mother Goose Fairytales These historic works of children’s literature apply as much today as they did hundreds of years ago, possessing an inexplicable worldwide and timeless appeal. The lessons they pretend to teach are important ones that will not be lost on your children, and the stories they tell are endearing.

3. Robert Munsch Love You Forever The topic of this book is quite serious - the evolution of the relationship between parent and child and the reversal of role of caretaker. It is sure to move both parents and children, entertaining while instilling an important life lesson in the process.

4. J.K. Rowling Harry Potter The books of the Harry Potter series are a great way to get kids hooked on literature. These high-action adventure stories are all but addictive. In fact, you may be surprised to find yourself becoming as attached to them than your child.

5. William Shakespeare Romeo & Juliet The story of Romeo & Juliet is one your child is sure to already know. Therefore, he or she will be able to follow the plot even through the sometimes confusing old English the classic poet employs. It is vital to introduce kids to this most influential English language writer, for his works have played a large part in the formation of the way we tell stories.

6. J.D. Salinger The Catcher in the Rye This book deals with very serious adult topics in a quite adolescent way. The voice it represents is that of a careless teen, but the lessons it instills are those of a very aware author. This novella speaks to adolescents about the world in a language to which they can relate.

7. Homer The Iliad and The Odyssey These two fundamental pieces of world literature are key to the understanding of writing and storytelling at their very beginnings. Though these epic poems can prove quite dense, like the works of Shakespeare, they form a vital part of the genealogical line that is world literature.

8. Emily Bronte Wuthering Heights This passionate novel is one for the ages. Not only will your child become enthralled in its story, but you may be inspired to get involved in it as well. Furthermore, Wuthering Heights is a prime example of literature written by female authors, among the first of its kind to be truly respected by critics.

Learn How To Effectively Speak German

Friday, September 25th, 2009

The time it takes for one to learn a new language, such as the German language, depends mainly on many prevailing factors - so there is no definite time frame when any person can finish such a course and how much of the lessons can be learned. These might be in the form or medium of instruction being used, the learning environment, the student’s educational background and learning aptitude, and the person’s reasons and goals. If you want to be effectively learn German in the fastest and easiest way, here are some helpful tips to ponder.

Set yourself up with goals that are realistic and easy to achieve. One of the main reasons why many students fail to get the most out of the lessons they are taking is that they have set some really high standards on their part, and they get frustrated when they stumble and fall with their lessons. Most also tend to lose focus and objectivity and blame the teacher or the methods that are being used, or even themselves heavily. It pays to start at the most basic of lessons before anything else advanced is introduced.

The English and German language originated from the Germanic tribes of Europe of old, so will have familiar words and phrases in the English vocabulary. Any English speaking person will then have the distinct advantage over others who do not when it comes when taking up to learning how to speak German courses. But with this advantage, students should also watch out for similar sounding words but have an entirely different meaning.

Listen, Read and Learn should be a mantra for all language students, as these will guide them accordingly when studying the German language - or any language for that matter. By learning to be passive, the mind is opened up to newer ideas, terms, themes and abilities. Listen to let the mind absorb and memorize, read to reinforce the lessons that have already been started, and learn by practicing again and again to make the lessons become a familiar facet of one’s self.

The learning process starts in the mind of the student and will influence how much and how fast they will learn anything.

If the student believes the lessons to be difficult, then so will it be; and if they think it’s easy, so shall it be. One thing to keep in mind though, is that learning the German language needs some form effort on one’s part in order to become fluent or adept at it.

I am fortunate to be able to communicate with others who are also studying sign language and this helps enormously. I also use ‘flash cards’ to help me and via an online study course that really got me started.

There is a lot of free information available online to help you learn. However, I have found that learning from a step by step program that you can follow in your own time has been the most helpful to me.

If you would like to find out more about the same course I used, check out my signature block towards the end of this article.

I have also written more articles on sign language that you may find interesting and have uploaded some excellent video tutorials demonstrating dozens of basic words.

Just as people without any hearing loss learn the basic words when they travel to a foreign country, sign language is no different.

A good place to start is to master the basic words like; colors, the time, introductions etc. and then progress to more advanced words and phrases when you become more competent.

It is much easier to watch a person signing a new word or phrase than it is to try and learn it from a written description or a picture. Short educational videos are now much more common place and make learning easier.

Fortunately there are websites like MySpace and YouTube where you will find lots of good video lessons that will help you learn plenty of new words.

If you want to learn a specific word, there are some very good online dictionaries that have video and/or written descriptions of signed words. Nearly all of them are for American Sign Language.

Here are some you can use:

* HandSpeak.com/sign * Lifeprint.com * Signingsavvy.com * Aslpro.com * Commtechlab.msu.edu/Sites/aslweb/browser.htm

These basic words will give you the basis to learning sign language and because of the number of free resources online, you really have a great opportunity to learn this rewarding language.

American Sign Language (ASL) is very easy to learn for native English speakers and requires only a small amount of dedication to become quite competent.

The joy of being able to communicate with people through sign language is not just wholly rewarding, it also has lots of social and educational benefits.

It really is surprising how many places you find yourself in having to communicate by sign, once you have learnt this new language.

The satisfaction of being able to converse with someone who is deaf, with even a basic level of sign language is just immense.

Believe me, if I can do it, so can you! If you want to learn ASL online as I did, I can highly recommend it.

I’m rooting for ya!

Work Hard & Play Hard With A Degree In French

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Undertaking a French degree at college might seem like it’s beyond you, but you will be amazed by the amount of French you actually do know so don’t back away from the challenge.

French courses at college are nothing like ones you will have taken before. In addition to studying the language, you will take classes in French literature and civilization. Within 4 years you will be speaking French fluently and you will likely have had the opportunity to experience living and studying overseas.

You will begin with basic French courses starting, with freshman placement tests being used to ensure that you are studying at the right level. It’s important to work hard and focus at the start as rapidly improving your French then will see you reaping the benefits later on in the course.

Once you’ve finished the initial French language course, you will move on to reading popular French literature. Along with literature, you will take a range of complimentary courses that might include advanced grammar, translation, advanced composition, french phonetics and french linguistics.

Your classes will likely be small, making it easy to get on friendly terms with your professors. Many college’s French department is like a family with everyone happy to help each other out and pool resources and ideas. Such an environment means you will have a very easy time getting letters of reference from lecturers after you graduate as they will know you so well.

However, such small classes can at times be a disadvantage too. There will be fewer course options to select from when compared to those studying other majors and, on occasions, courses get cancelled because of under-enrollment.

Once you’ve completed your course after four years you will have no problem finding work. A fair number of graduates work as translators whilst others transition into linguistics, literary analysis and comparative literature. However, the vast majority of of those graduating start teach French themselves or move on to post-graduate French studies.
